Meteorite Hunter privacy

Last updated 8 September 2026. Operator: Anthony Taves (vibealive.us).

Meteorite Hunter is an education field map of radar-detected and catalog meteorite falls in the United States (CONUS, Alaska, Hawaii). It is free. It is not an official NASA, NOAA, USGS, BLM, AMS, Iowa State University, or xAI product.

What Meteorite Hunter collects

Meteorite Hunter does not create an account. It does not run ads, analytics SDKs, or tracking. There are no in-app purchases. There is no advertising identifier.

Precise location is off until you opt in (When In Use). The waypoint, accuracy ring, heading, and session trail stay on this iPhone so you can see where you are relative to a fall cone. They are never uploaded, sold, or used for advertising. Turn GPS off and the map still works.

Photos you attach to a find pin stay in this app’s Application Support on the device. They are not uploaded. Export GPX/KML only when you choose.

Find pins, notes, optional mass, and cached USGS field tiles stay on this iPhone.

What leaves the device

While the app is open it requests public catalogs over HTTPS. Those requests do not include your GPS, photos, pins, or Apple ID:

• NASA/JPL CNEOS fireball API
• Iowa Environmental Mesonet NEXRAD scan times and RIDGE pictures
• Global Meteor Network daily trajectory summaries
• NOAA NOMADS GFS, IEM radiosonde, or NOAA Aviation Weather Center winds, matched to a fireball time
• USGS National Map imagery tiles if you cache a field pack
• USGS PAD-US and BLM Surface Management Agency if land tint is on
• Apple MapKit for the online base map

Mail this opens the iOS Mail composer with your own accounts. The app never collects an email address and never sends until you tap Send. It cannot send email in the background.

Optional on-device alerts stay on this iPhone. They are delayed-catalog banners, not a live fall alarm.

Permissions

• Location (When In Use, precise) — optional hunt waypoint. Deny it and the map still works.
• Camera / Photo Library — optional, only if you add a photo to a pin.

Privacy Nutrition Labels: precise location and photos, on device, app functionality, not linked, not tracking.

Meteorite Hunter does not sell personal data.

Children

The app is a general-audience education map. It is not directed at children under 13.
